Dr. Bermudez Presents Continuing Education Program 

Lock Haven, PA – As part of the ongoing, Continuing Medical Education programs for the medical staff at Lock Haven Hospital, Maria Bermudez, MD, board certified, nephrologist delivered a presentation entitled, Prevention, Detection and Management of Acute Kidney Injury.

 

Dr. Bermudez gave an overview of the disease and the transition in terminology from renal failure to kidney injury and the broad scope of what defines acute kidney injury (AKI). Bermudez also discussed the RIFLE criteria for the diagnosis of AKI, including:

·         Risk of renal injury

·         Injury to the kidney

·         Failure of kidney function

·         Loss of kidney function

·         End-stage disease

Dr. Bermudez covered the range of Acute Kidney Injury and the causes of the disease, the indicators and symptoms and the variety of testing protocols available to identify AKI. Bermudez discussed the implementation of the management and treatment options that are available.

Nephrology concerns the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases by regulating blood pressure, balancing electrolytes and fluids, and renal replacement therapy. Dr. Bermudez served her internal medicine residency at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA and completed a fellowship in nephrology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine / Montefiore Medical Center, New York, NY.
