Forty-seven emergency responders, from various Clinton County fire and rescue, and professional paramedic units attended the state of Pennsylvania approved, program. The presentation was conducted by Hinda Greene, M.D., the medical director of the Lock Haven Hospital emergency department.
During the presentation, Dr. Greene discussed tactics for initial injury assessment, including the ABCs of: airway, breathing, circulation, disability and exposing and examining the various parts of the body that may have been subjected to injury. Dr. Greene covered the steps of delivering supportive care and developing a specific diagnosis.

“In an emergency, first responders play a critical role in the team that delivers emergency treatment to patients in traumatic circumstances,” said Cindy Segar-Miller, Chief Executive Officer, Lock Haven Hospital. “Dr. Greene and the Lock Haven Emergency Department team developed a program that will help EMS personnel to not only address these injuries but also to communicate the course of diagnosis and treatment.”
In order to maintain state certification, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires paramedics to have 18 hours of certified, continuing medical education credits annually, while emergency medical technicians are required to take 24 hours and first responders, 18 hours, over the course of a three year period.
