Pain Management Specialist Discusses Vertebral Fractures 

Dr. Marek Kurowski Presents Continuing Education Program

Lock Haven, PA – As part of the ongoing, continuing medical education programs for the medical staff at Lock Haven Hospital, Marek Kurowski, MD, interventional pain management specialist, delivered a presentation entitled, Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty: Pain Management Treatment of Vertebral Compression Fractures. 

Dr. Kurowski presented an overview of osteoporosis, a systemic skeletal disease with symptoms including compromised bone strength, that can lead to fractures. Kurowski offered detailed statistics including:

• 700,000 vertebral compression fractures (VCF) occur annually in the United States.
• Approximately 150,000 people per year are hospitalized in the U.S. due to pain and medical management of VCFs.
• Osteoporosis-related disability confines patients to more immobile days in bed than stroke, heart attack or breast cancer.

Dr. Kurowski detailed the balloon Kyphoplasty procedure, which stabilizes the vertebral fractures and correct spinal deformity caused by VCFs. 

“Vertebral fractures are often difficult to diagnose. Dr. Kurowski’s presentation has given physicians a good overview of what to look for when patients are suffering,” said Cindy Segar-Miller, chief executive officer, Lock Haven Hospital. “Given the specialized treatment options that Dr. Kurowski is certified to perform locally, patients no longer need to suffer through grueling travel to receive relief from the pain.

Dr. Kurowski completed a Pain Medicine Fellowship at The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA.  He is Board Certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Kurowski completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center.
