Sleep Lab Services
Through evaluation and treatment, the Sleep Lab at Lock Haven Hospital helps people who have difficulty falling asleep at night, those who have trouble maintaining sleep or those having difficulty staying awake during the day.
The Sleep Lab performs both Polysomnography and Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT). Diagnostic Polysomnography and Polysomnography with CPAP or BiPAP treatment is usually done at night (except for those individuals that normally sleep during the day). During this test, a variety of body functions are monitored, including the electrical activity of the brain, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, respiratory effort, air flow and blood oxygen levels. These tests are used both to diagnose sleep apnea and to determine its severity. The MSLT test measures the speed of falling asleep. The patient is given several opportunities to fall asleep during the course of a day when they would normally be awake. Individuals who fall asleep in less than five minutes are likely to require some treatment for sleep disorders. This is the test done for narcolepsy.
In our Lab, each patient has a private room decorated in a home-like setting. Each room has a full sized bed, soft comfortable pillows and blankets, a private bathroom, and television and VCR. This natural and comfortable environment allows our patients to feel relaxed and helps provide more accurate results. The most up-to-date technology is available to assist in the diagnosis of each patient's sleeping disorder. Shower facilities are conveniently located within the Sleep Lab.
Preliminary test results are sent to the ordering physician immediately following the patient’s study. When indicated, Sleep Lab staff will make arrangements for home CPAP or BiPAP therapy with the home care provider of the patient’s choosing. All qualifying data is sent directly to the HCP, requiring the physician only to send a prescription for the service.
In addition to performing diagnostic testing and treatment, we also offer follow up, patient support, and community education.
