You Can Achieve...Through Therapy

At Lock Haven Hospital, a range of therapy services are provided to assist the patient in returning to a normal lifestyle as fully as possible following an illness or injury. Services are available in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Physical Therapy

Trained and dedicated Physical Therapists treat your illness or injury by physical means with the use of light, heat, water, exercise, sound and electric waves. The therapist works to enable you to achieve your highest functional level by helping you to improve strength, regain motion, relieve pain and promote healing. As an inpatient or outpatient you are referred to the Physical Therapy Department by your physician for treatment of various illnesses including stroke, fractures, burns, muscle and nerve injuries, arthritis, heart attacks and many others. Specific pieces of equipment called modalities, which include whirlpool, traction, diathermy, hot and cold packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulators, and T.E.N.S. are used along with exercise and education in the treatment of your injury.

Occupational Therapy Trained

Occupational Therapists help patients achieve their greatest possible function in relationship to their disability. Therapist work closely with individuals referred by their physician following an illness such as a stroke, heart attack, major bone fracture, arthritis, cancer, head injury, nerve injury or disorder, back pain, diabetes, amputation, or emphysema. The therapist is committed to helping the person become as independent as possible by teaching them to understand their disability and learn to compensate for it. Patients are retrained in normal activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, cooking, bed making and shaving. Assistance is provided to the patient in regaining skills for gainful employment as appropriate. Patients are also given adaptive equipment as needed to live a more normal lifestyle.

Speech Therapy

The Speech Therapist is trained in the studying and/or treating of all aspects of functional and organized speech defects and swallowing disorders. The Speech Therapist is primarily dedicated towards helping a patient recovering from an illness such as a stroke that has resulted in some difficulty in his/her ability to speak or swallow.

Outpatient Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase II is the next step to improved quality of life for people with cardiac conditions.

On an outpatient basis, exercises are performed under the supervision of trained personnel. A small heart monitor will be worn to determine the heart rhythm, heart rate and the tolerance level for each of the exercises. Throughout the twelve-week program, each participant will exercise three times per week for approximately one hour per session.

The five exercise modalities utilized are exercise bicycles, a walking treadmill, rowing machine, arm ergometers and handweights.

Cardiac Patients are accepted only with a written referral from their personal physician. Educational materials will be available for each patient along with personal cardiac instructions, if needed.

The cardiac rehabilitation nurse will be supervising each exercise session. The Medical Director will be monitoring the cardiac rehabilitation program.
